Introducing Forest School in Middle Tennessee

Welcome to the first post in our new blog series, "The Wonder Woods: Inquiry and Imagination." In this blog, we explore the magic of learning through nature, inspiring creativity, curiosity, and connection — all at Oakview Farm Forest School, nestled in the heart of Middle Tennessee.
Forest School is more than an outdoor classroom; it’s a philosophy rooted in child-led, inquiry-based learning, nurturing deep bonds with the natural world. In our unique setting, children ages three through ten engage with the rhythms of the seasons, the life of the farm, and the wonders of our five acres of mixed hardwood and cedar barrens forest. Children learn through play, inquiry, and meaningful relationships — with peers, Forest School Guides/Teachers, and the land itself.
Why Forest School in Middle Tennessee?
Rich and Diverse Natural Environment: Our farm and surrounding woodlands provide a living classroom full of diverse plants, animals, and ecosystems to discover.
Seasonal Cycles: From the short, but crisp Winter to vibrant Spring, each season invites new inquiries, fueled by children's compassion, creativity, and connection to the ever-changing landscape of the farm and forest.
Community & Compassion: We nurture a supportive, inclusive community where children and families can grow and learn together in compassion and mutual respect.
In this blog series, we’ll share stories, reflections, and practical ideas inspired by our Forest School journey. We invite you to join us in cultivating wonder, imagination, and a lifelong love of learning rooted in nature.
Together, let’s wander into the woods and watch imagination and
curiosity bloom. -Rob Shaffer, Oakview Farm Forest School Director
